Taboo: Firefox Addon to Cleverly Save Tabs

taboo After spending around an hour browsing I end up having too many tabs opened, sometime I could reach maybe fifty or a hundred opened tabs!! And that just makes surfing the net slower, and when I look back on my opened tabs I realize that more than half of them I just would like to save to read later.

taboo Taboo is a Firefox addon that helps in doing just that, developed by Jesse Andrews, Ian Fischer and Manish Singh. After installing it, two new buttons will show up one has a “+” and the other has a “T”. Pressing the plus button saves the tab, not only the page is saved but actually even the scroll location of where you have reached reading in the page and if you were filling a form, the content will be saved too.

To access the saved tabs click on the “T” button, there are two views to access the tabs, either by Grid or Calendar, in the Grid view you will be shown thumbnails of all the tabs you have saved, you can get a better view of the tab by moving the mouse over the thumbnails where you will get a bigger snapshot of the page accompanied by the Title and the URL.

Grid View

On the other hand, the Calendar View will show you one thumbnail on each day on the calendar and when you click on any day all the thumbnails of all the tabs saved on that day will be shown.

Calendar View

The other feature that I like the most is the search, quickly find saved tabs while typing in keywords. You can also access the latest 15 saved tabs from the drop down menu when clicking the arrow beside the the “T” button.

A newer version of the extension is promised by Jesse Andrews to release soon with new cool features such as a mosaic view and resizing in the grid view.

Taboo could be useful for many reasons, such as bad browsing habits like over tabbing,  or while working on a project and reading materials from number of sources. Whatever your reason is, if you surf the net, you need Taboo. If you still do not use Firefox or Flock, you are in trouble :)

Use Stumbleupon using any Web Browser

stumble Stumbleupon is a very cool way to discover the net, you simply choose what kind of websites you would like to stumble upon, and then with a simple click you stumble from one website to another, recommended by people like you. Stumbleupon will better know your taste when you give those websites a thumbs up or down, you can even write a comment about the website.

One tiny problem with stumbleupon is that you have to download a toolbar so you will be able to do all these things, now here comes the disadvantage is that the toolbar can be installed on IE and Firefox only, so those who use Opera or Safari wont be able to use stumbleupon. Although a while ago Opera did have a WIDGET for stumbleupon but for a while now it is not available.

Anyway, now Stumbleupon is testing a new way for stumbling without the use of the toolbar, you can stumbleupon websites using any browser. Just go to http://www.stumbleupon.com/demo/#url=  and you will see a virtual Stumbleupon toolbar which has all the options and features of the regular toolbar. All what you can do for now is hit stumble to go to a random website, you can’t use your stumbleupon account and you cant vote for any website since this is still in demo phase. Happy stumbling.

The First Amr Adeeb FaceBook Application

While I was searching around for different stuff for facebook, I found a website that makes it easy to create FaceBook applications, and yes you guessed it, no need to know programming!, Although I knew couple of other websites that has sort of this kind of service, but it does not come as simple and straightforward as this.

Dapper is not only for creating facebook applications, nope, it has a number of other uses, but I will fully review it soon in a new post. Dapper basically allows you to create facebook applications by using content from the web. So I wanted to try it out, I created this new application that now around 40 people use it in facebook, it is “Amr Adeeb Videos” application.

Pretty simple, I made this application search on youtube for the latest videos for Amr Adeeb, he is a famous Arab talk show host in Egypt, anyway it was simple, I made the settings, created the application, went to Facebook and submitted my new application.

The application basically shows you 3 clickable titles of the latest 3 videos on youtube for Amr Adeeb, you can see more links by clicking the “See All” link to see more videos.

amradeebapp

The applications is very small and simple, and the way it was done is also simple. If you want to add “Amr Adeeb Videos”  application, just Click Here.

Opera files complaint against Microsoft

Opera filed a complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft to force it to make changes to Internet Explorer on Windows. Basically they want Microsoft to unbundle IE from windows or provide alternative browsers such as Opera and Firefox, Opera also wants Microsoft to make IE follow fundamental and open web standards.

I love Opera, no really I do, I used to use it as my main browser for a while and now I keep going back and forth using it and Firefox. And I RARELY use IE. And I understand what they mean by unbundling IE from windows, which is an old story, but anyway, and I am all with providing alternative web browsers.

Read more and watch Opera CTO Video after the jump…

In regard to IE following the open web standards, their argument is basically because IE has limitations and bugs in implementing the web technologies (XHTML, CSS, and DOM), and because IE is the most used browser developers are forced in make changes and tweaks to their websites to appear properly on IE. But what will happen? What do you want ?! You want the European Commission to rule that developers can only specific versions of those web technologies!!

What I see here is an angry/sad Opera because no one is using their browser, now maybe if they have been giving their browser for free from the start, things might have been different.

Here is the video of their CTO`talking about Opera’s antitrust complaint against Microsoft:

Buzzword, now that’s what I call a "Word Processor"

Google Docs, Zoho Writer and now Adobe Buzzword. Since the start of the rise of online document editors, I always asked myself, why those websites do not use flash instead of Ajax and I still don’t really get it. I always thought "FLASH" would be better and faster. I know that "Live Documents" will also use the FLASH technology.

Adobe Buzzword although came a bit late to the game, but there are couple or more things that makes it better than the others. Obviously being in FLASH is the first that comes to mind, it really makes it super fast. Buzzword is far more simpler and easy on the eye’s too. It works on any operating system, your computer just needs to have Adobe Flash installed, which is available in most computers by default anyway.

To read a full review click More…

As soon as you finish your registration you are quickly switched to the main page. In the main page you can basically either create a new document, open a saved document in Buzzword or open a document from your harddisk.

buzz1

The beauty of Buzzword, being in flash, the menus are smooth and fast. And nicely organized, and on your first look you would get the wrong impression that BUZZWORD lacks features and options.

buzz3a

But you will be very mistaken to think so, just click on any of the icons and it will slide revealing various features. The picture below shows some of them.

image

We shouldn’t forget the pull down menus too, which also hold a number of different kind of options.

image

image image image

The "History" feature keeps track of different changes that you make on a document so you can switch between them easily.

image

In Buzzword you can also insert Pictures and Comments.

image

image

Document sharing, you can make a document private or share it with others in a very simple way, setting a role for the person you are sharing the document with. There are three roles. Co-Author where he can do anything with the document, Reviewer where he can read and comment on the document, and Reader where he is only allowed to read the document.

There are other great features also, such as Zooming, using a slidebar you can zoom the document in and out which automatically resize everything in it.  You can also insert special characters, and Offcourse, the automatic word count is useful when you are limited to number of words.

Now that is all great stuff in BUZZWORD, but there are couple of things that I found negative in it, nothing is perfect in this world. Anyway, the first thing that bothered me is the limited number of fonts available, which are only seven fonts.

image

The second thing is what happens sometimes when you upload a picture, it took me three tries to upload an image, a message keeps coming up stating that "Buzzword could not contact the server to complete our action". I tried doing this using IE, Firefox, FLOCK which is Firefox anyway, and I tried it from my Toshiba G30 Notebook and My Desktop PC. Sometimes the image is uploaded from the first time, but the error window do appear quite often.

image

For a full help guide for Buzzword Click Here.

In the end I would like to say that Adobe Buzzword is a good, easy and fast Word Processor. Couple of enhancements here and there and it will defiantly become THE web REAL Word Processor.

Firefox 3 Beta 1 is out.. Whats good and whats not?

Don’t even think of replacing your current Firfox with this, no, just give it time this is still Beta. I downloaded it yesterday and I didn’t want to quickly write any post just saying its out, i wanted to have a look at it first. Make sure its a real Beta. This is a real Beta release. Thank God.

Although you will hear praises all over the net of how great this version is, but still some things don’t change, yes you guessed it, MEMORY usage. Its still not fully dealt with, of-course I already told you before of an add-on for Firefox 3 that helps with this problem, but i was wishing that maybe the issue would be resolved directly by Mozilla. After using this beta for couple of hours Firefox ended up eating 825,636k of my memory (as shown in the pic below) . So the issue is still there. Am not saying that there was no improvements at all, of-course there are several enhancements. (Continue reading after the jump)

Firefox now uses the Gecko rendering engine, which makes things smoother, but not as smooth as we want yet!. In addition of security features that alerts you while visiting insecure websites and allows you to automatically virus scan your downloads with your Anti-Virus scanner (as shown in the pic below).

I am sure tho, the most beloved new feature by web surfers would be the “PLACES” feature, where it makes it easier to find websites you have visited recently or more often or even starred them for later browsing.

Download it and give it a try…

And HostGator it is!

Yup! I moved from wordpress.com, and I have my own domain now www.ibrahimo.com, I still need to change some things around, but the main stuff is done.

In the last post I told you that I am bouncing between bluehost and lunarpages, but after researching I  went with hostgator, which until now seems the right choice, I had couple of issues early today and their tech support was very good.

I will resume full activity in posting within couple of days…

Why no new posts?!

Well since around a week now I became less active in the blog because I was shocked when I found out that blogs on wordpress.com don’t really have full control, so to advance my blog I have to get my own hosting, and that what I am doing now, it still going to take couple of days to set things up the way i want.

In the mean time  i would be happy to get your feedback on which is the best hosting companies for blogs. I am still bouncing between bluehost and lunarpages.
